USA Triathlon Announces Elite
Team for World Triathlon Championships

USA Triathlon, the U.S. national
governing body for the multi-sport disciplines of triathlon and duathlon,
has announced the names of the elite triathletes it submitted to the
International Triathlon Union (ITU) for the
2001 ITU World Triathlon Championships.
Assuming they are approved by the
ITU, these athletes will compete at worlds on July 22 in Edmonton,
Alberta, Canada. The race will be draft legal and Olympic distance - 1.5K swim,
40K bike, 10K run.
Women:
Barb Lindquist (32; ranked No. 3 in the world; Wilson, Wyo.)
Laura Reback (26; No. 5; North Palm Beach, Fla.)
Jennifer Gutierrez (34; No. 10; Greenwood Village, Colo.)
Becky Gibbs (27; No. 17; San Jose, Calif.)
Joanna Zeiger (31; No. 19; Baltimore, Md.)
Sheila Taormina (32; No. 29; Livonia, Mich.)
Men:
Hunter Kemper (25; No. 15; Longwood, Fla.)
Andy Kelsey (33; No. 30; Cupertino, Calif.)
Michael Smedley (27; No. 56; Colorado Springs, Colo.)
Joe Umphenour (32; No. 58; Seattle, Wash.)
Brian Fleischman (22; No. 139; Tallahassee, Fla.)
Brent Perdrizet (24; No. 181; New Fairfield, Conn.)
Kemper, Smedley, Umphenour and
Perdrizet are all resident athletes at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in
Colorado Springs, Colo.
Gibbs, Taormina, Umphenour,
Smedley, Kelsey and Sara McLarty (18; Deland, Fla.) will represent the United
States
at the 2001 Aquathlon World Championships, which will be July 18 in Edmonton.
The event consists of a 2K run,
750m swim and 2K run.
USA Triathlon Certified Coach Joe
Friel and USA Triathlon National Teams Director Libby Burrell will coach the
teams.
USA Triathlon Resident Team Coach Michelle Blessing will be coaching U.S. junior
elite athletes in Edmonton.
The U.S. team leader is USA Triathlon Deputy Director Tim Yount
