Mercury Interactive Silicon Valley Marathon to Celebrate Five-Year Anniversary

New Training Program, Led by World-Class Runners, Helps Participants Achieve Peak Performance

Sunnyvale, Calif. July 2001 —The Mercury Interactive Silicon Valley Marathon returns to San Jose on Sunday, October 28, celebrating its five-year anniversary, and offers a new training program to help runners of all levels achieve their personal best. In addition, Mercury Interactive Corp. (Nasdaq:  MERQ), the leading provider of Web performance management solutions, will be title sponsor of the event for the second consecutive year. Hundreds of Silicon Valley companies are expected to support the event through their participation and sponsorship, which will directly benefit the education programs of the San Jose Tech Museum of Innovation.

This year, the Mercury Interactive Silicon Valley Marathon will implement a new training program, led by world-class trainers Eddy Hellebuyk and Gerald Pearlberg, who will provide training regimens, group training sessions, nutritional counseling and support throughout the 20-week program. In addition, all program participants will have online access to USA Track & Field certified coaches. “We are incredibly fortunate to have Eddy and Gerald as our coaches for the training program,” said Tom Bradley of Firstwave Events, producers of the Mercury Interactive Silicon Valley Marathon. “Because we have some of the greatest long-distance runners in the country working with the participants, the program is truly one of the best we’ve ever seen.”

In honor of its five-year anniversary, the event will recognize “Fifth-year Finishers” by providing a distinctive race bib, commemorative t-shirt and medallion with a “Five-year Finisher” ribbon to athletes completing all marathons in the last five years. In addition, all finishers will receive a new version of the events’ high-tech finisher’s medal, which incorporates actual printed circuit boards from Motherboard Enterprises and silicon chips from companies like Phillips and SiRF Technologies.

Mercury Interactive marks its second year as title sponsor of the event. The company chose to become involved in this premier competitive event because of the combination of the company’s technology leadership, local presence and the marathon’s established profile in Silicon Valley.  “We are proud to be title sponsor of an event that caters to all skill levels, ages and athletic abilities, and makes every participant a winner,” said Sharlene Abrahms, Mercury Interactive CFO and finisher of last years’ event.

Last year, the marathon attracted more than 3500 runners and Mercury Interactive reported that $50,000 was raised for The Tech Museum of Innovation through corporate sponsorship of 26 aid stations throughout the marathon course. In addition to Mercury Interactive’s title sponsorship, this years’ race will be sponsored by companies such as Fortune Magazine, Saturn, General Dynamics, United Parcel Service and the San Jose Mercury News, and is expected to draw an even larger number of participants, due to the event’s increasing presence and stature in the worldwide running community.

The Mercury Interactive Silicon Valley Marathon is a 26.2-mile journey through the land of technology. Starting and finishing in downtown San Jose, the looped course takes runners through the heart of Silicon Valley. In addition to the marathon, other events will include a half marathon, team relay, and kid’s races– which celebrate youth fitness – and emphasize that every child is a winner.  Spectators along the route can expect to enjoy live entertainment and the camaraderie of cheering on family, friends and elite runners.
