Potomac Valley Track Club announced its 2001
honorees at its annual awards
picnic on Sunday, June 24, at the Briggs home in Springfield, Virginia.
Club president Sal Corrallo presented the Ray Gordon Outstanding Athlete
Award to Evelyn Wright, 64,
of Annapolis MD, who works in Arlington VA. An accomplished multi-sport
athlete, Wright shares the national
record for the High Jump among women 60-64 (4 feet, 1.25 inches indoors,
4'1.5"; 4'2" pending verification outdoors)
and hold the national record for the Triple Jump in that group (26 feet,10
inches indoors), according to National
Masters News. She completes frequently at PVTC meets and represents the
club at regional and national meets.
(Ray Gordon was one of the founders of PVTC and one of its first
presidents.)
Corrallo presented the Ed Barron Memorial Service Award to Jay Jacob Wind,
51, of Arlington VA.
Wind runs PVTC events all year, directs PVTC's indoor meets with DC Road
Runners Club,
publishes PVTC's website, and moderates its e-mail list. Wind's most
important service to the club, however,
is that he stays after the summer track meets and helps clean up, Corrallo
said.
(Ed Barron was a founder of PVTC and the originator of age group awards in
races.)
The President's Award for Outstanding Service to the Club went to Tim
Baker of Silver Spring MD,
the reliable, knowledgable official at the start or finish line of all the
club's track meets. Baker was the driving
force behind the club's mastery of the FlashBrite fully automatic timing
system.
The Carl Schueler Racewalker of the Year Award went to Kara Boufflert, 34,
of Washington DC, a champion
racewalker who won numerous titles the last few years. Wearing the
PVTC jersey at the National Championship
50-kilometer racewalk on March 31 in Manassas VA, Boufflert led for the
first 20K before dropping back to
second place to Susan Armenta, who was not pregnant at the time, unlike
Kora, who was.
(Carl Schueler, now trains racewalkers at the US Olympic Training Center
in Colorado Springs. He was a
Bethesda MD resident when he won the Olympic Gold Medal at the 50K
racewalk in Mexico City in 1968.)
