Over the Pike”
at Sunday’s Sixth Annual Pike’s Peek 10k
By Nancy Betress
Ever wonder what it would be like to see Rockville Pike without your car? Sunday morning, April 29, 2001, at 8:00 a.m., 3500 runners will get to experience that feeling as they take over Rockville Pike at the sixth annual Pike’s Peek 10k.
Conducted by the Montgomery County Road Runners Club (MCRRC), the event combines a morning of fitness, food and fun for the entire family. In addition to the 10k, there are the White Flint Family Runs consisting of a 1k “family fun run” for kids and their parents and a 50 meter “toddler trot” for children 5 years and under conducted on the festival grounds at White Flint. There will also be games and entertainment for the children.
Dreaming of a PR? Then this is the course for you! Designed for speed, the course begins at Redland Road and Somerville Drive near the Shady Grove Metro Station then turns left on to MD Route 355, Rockville Pike. From there, it’s a straight shot down the Pike with a 190-ft. elevation drop. Once runners cross the finish line in front of White Flint, a sumptuous buffet will be awaiting them in the parking lot at the post-race festival.
Online registration closes April 26, 2001 and Mail in registration has closed.
Packet pick up and late registration will take place at White Flint near Bloomingdale’s on Friday, April 27, 2001, 3-9 p.m. and Saturday April 28, 12 noon-6p.m. for distribution of bib numbers, t-shirts and information. Distribution of the ChampionChip to all 10k runners will take place at Shady Grove only on race day morning.
