LAWYERS TAKE TO THE STREETS FOR THE AMERICAN HEART
ASSOCIATION
By George Banker
Washington, D.C. June 6, 2001 - Georgetown Washington Harbour will take a
new shape as lawyers, judges and law administrators take to the streets
without cell phones and legal briefs. On Saturday, June 9, 2001, 7:30
a.m., a field in excess of 2,500 runners are expected for the 11th Lawyers
Have
Heart 10K and the 7th 5K. The presenting sponsor, Westlaw and supporting
sponsors team up to provide a race to benefit the American Heart
Association. The race will bring together some of the best local running
talent.
Since 1991 Lawyers Have Heart has raised in excess of $2 million for the
American Heart Association, whose mission is to reduce cardiovascular
disease (CVD) and stroke. CVD has continued to be a number one killer of
all Americans. Every 33 seconds heart disease kills.
The start of both races will be at 33rd and K Streets. The 5K is out and
back along M Street and Canal Road with the finish at 31st and K Streets.
The 10K will continue along Canal Road and turn at Reservoir Road and
proceed past Georgetown University Hospital. The course goes towards 31st
Street and has a dramatic down hill finish at K Street.
The top male and female runners in the 10K will be running for a pair of
FIRST CLASS airline tickets (2) for travel in the US, Mexico, or the
Caribbean. The top male and female masters will receive a heart rate
monitor and a $100 gift certificate from Fleet Feet.
Awards to be given to the overall top three males and females in the 5K
and 10K and the top masters. Age group categories will be 19 and under and
then five years up to age 69 and then 70 and over. Team awards will be in
the
10K only and there will be numerous random prizes.
The open event records for the 10K was set in 1994 by Jerry Lawson in
30:18 and Charlotte Thomas in 34:42. The masters records were by Bill Lee
in
1992 (33:23) and by Marny Gilluly in 1993 (41:25).
The 5K open records were set in 1996 by two-time winner Robert Lotwis in
15:15 and Kim Saddic in 1997 in 17:02. The masters records were set in
1996 by Patrick Sullivan in 17:45 and Linda Walkup in 1998 in 20:07.
Two-time winner (1999 32:22, 2000 31:34) , Philippe Rolly will return to
defend his title. Donna Moore, 1999 winner (37:22) will be returning along
with other area runners.
