SPRING DC MARATHON PROPOSED

ARLINGTON, VA --  A local entertainment company, H2O Entertainment Group, Inc.,  has presented a plan to the Mayor’s Event Task Force outlining a proposed marathon to take place in Washington, DC on March 24, 2002.  The group has also met with the National Park Service to get their blessing on a route which traverses some of the city’s parkland.

The proposed route takes runners throughout all quadrants of the city and starts at Memorial Bridge and ends at Freedom Plaza and is currently undergoing certification by USA Track & Field.  Once certified, this course would also give Washington a certified course to include in their bid for the Olympics.

The marathon has been scheduled to fall in between the Boston and Los Angeles marathons so runners could participate in all three.   It is also scheduled 7 months after the Marine Corps Marathon so as not to conflict with that race.

A follow-up meeting is scheduled with the National Park Service next week and it is hoped that permitting will then begin.  For information on the Washington DC Marathon visit the web site at www.washingtondcmarathon.com or call 703-528-8176.
