RICHMOND, VA - Kenyan Elly
Rono broke from the pack early and easily won today's second annual Ukrop's
Monument Avenue 10k, presented by SunCom. The
30-year-old Rono, who resides in Durham, NC, finished the race in a time of 29
minutes, 59 seconds, 3 seconds ahead of Russian Sergey Fedetov from Rockville,
Md. On the women’s size,
27-year-old Anna Pichrtova, a native of the Czech Republic living in Waynesboro,
Va., won in a course record time of 34:57.
Russian Irina Suvorova of Rockville, who won the 2000 SunTrust Richmond
Marathon, was second in a time of 37:39.
A total of 4,680 runners registered for the race, almost doubling last
year's field of 2,462. The Ukrop's
Monument Avenue 10k is now the largest race in the state of Virginia and one of
the top 20 10k races in the country ranked by number of finishers, according to
USA Track & Field records.
The race raised more than $20,000 for the Association for the Support of
Children with Cancer (ASK), the event's official beneficiary.
The top male and female winners each received $500, with $250 going to
the second place finishers, $125 for third, $75 for fourth and $50 for fifth.
